Still from the Andre Tarkovsky motion picture "Stalker" 1979

I consider Andre Tarkovsky to be one of the greatest motion picture directors to have lived, and I rank his late 1970's film "Stalker" as one of, if not the greatest, piece of poetry committed to film.  It is of course not everybody's cup of tea, indeed the majority of people would find the near three hour length, and English subtitles somewhat off-putting, not to mention the fact that the film itself is light years away from a mainstream Hollywood production.  "Stalker", which I first viewed as an 18 year old, spoke to me in a particular way, and it still speaks to me, although the language has become far more advanced in the intervening years.  The thing about great art, is that it has this element... an ability to transcend time, and the vagaries of fashion, to speak to the individual in a highly personal and intimate way.
