Untitled (Chamber Autopsy) (2003)

Cardboard, plaster, polymer clay, resin, acrylic, acrylic paint, wood.

2900 x 360 x 330mm

Property of the artist.

Exhibited: "Temperature: Contemporary Queensland Sculpture", Museum of Brisbane, 2004.

Within the confines of the "white cube" this enigmatic image of three figures on autopsy tables (including the central inverted effigy of the artist), combines several aspects of recent investigations by the artist.

To either side of the artist are figures which at one time or another, were plastered all over the popular press.  To the artists right, an alien figure, evocative of the Roswell "Alien Autopsy", lies inert, to the left, a member of the UFO cult "Heaven's Gate", which committed mass suicide in 1997, while wearing brand new NIKE sneakers and draped with a purple shroud.  The symbolism of each of these figures contrasts with the figure of the artist, lying in a contrasting direction between the two figures, juxtaposing his position and status amongst the group.

Behind the three figures is a trolley containing instruments and literature pertaining to critical arts analysis: notepad, laptop, writing materials.

Three elements of voyeurism are incorporated into the artwork, the silent but invasive surveillance camera, the gallery security guard looking on quietly, and the several anonymous, almost faceless individuals looking on through tinted glass.

"Untitled (Chamber Autopsy)", continues a series of work which affirms Macintyre's investigations into the self, and modern mythology.
